Comparison of Ward 5 Leaders: Gordon Fletcher and Vincent Orange

Ward 5 is a diverse neighborhood located in the heart of Washington, D.C. With a population of over 75,000 residents, the community is home to several prominent members, including Gordon Fletcher and Vincent Orange. 


Gordon Fletcher is a lifelong resident of Ward 5 and has been a community leader for over two decades. He is a graduate of the University of the District of Columbia and is an active member of the Ward 5 Democratic Party. Fletcher has held various positions in the community, including serving as a board member of the Lamond Riggs Citizens Association and as a member of the Ward 5 Education Council.

Vincent Orange is another prominent member of Ward 5. He is a graduate of Howard University and has held several positions in public service, including serving as an at-large member of the Council of the District of Columbia from 1999 to 2007 and from 2011 to 2017. Orange was also the Chairman of the Council from 2012 to 2013.


During his time on the Council, Orange was a strong advocate for economic development and job creation. He was instrumental in bringing major companies such as Walmart and Costco to the District, which created thousands of jobs for residents. Orange also worked to create opportunities for small businesses, including introducing legislation that provided tax incentives for small businesses and minority-owned businesses.


In addition to his work on economic development, Orange was also a champion for education. He worked to ensure that all students in the District had access to quality education and introduced legislation that provided funding for after-school programs and summer learning programs.


Both Fletcher and Orange have made significant contributions to the community in Ward 5. Their commitment to affordable housing, education, and economic development has helped make Ward 5 a better place for all residents.


However, their time in public service has not been without controversy. In 2016, Orange was fined $26,000 for accepting illegal campaign contributions during his 2011 re-election campaign. Similarly, Fletcher has faced criticism for his role in the ongoing investigation into alleged corruption at the District of Columbia Housing Authority.


Despite these controversies, Fletcher and Orange remain important members of the community in Ward 5. They have both dedicated their lives to serving the people of their community, and their contributions should not be overlooked.
